I know there's more criteria than just weight and price. However, I'd like to make a plug for a tent that won't break the bank and didn't make the list for best all around economy/starter tent. I'm very happy with my LL Bean FS2. It's free standing and weighs in 3 lb, 12 oz. and won't break the novice's bank at $199 (cheaper than any on the list). I should also mention that this tent was the 2012 Backpaker Magazine Editor's Choice Award.
If you are truly looking to reduce the weight of your tent you need to check out Six Moon Designs or Tarptents two man tents.
