Gear Review: SmartWool PhD SmartLoft Divide Full Zip

A versatile jacket that's comfy in temps from 20 to 60.

[core warmth]
Our gear editor has worn this versatile jacket as part of a layering system in temps down to the 20s, as her outer layer while hiking hard in the 40s, and as a summer camp coat in the 60s. The super-stretchy arms and back (merino with a touch of elastane) provide freedom of movement and breathability during high exertion, like when she was cross-country skiing along Vermont’s Catamount Trail. The core is armored with a nylon-shelled layer of quilted insulation (a merino/polyester blend), which boosts warmth and cuts wind. Extra long thumb-holed sleeves never ride up, though the short neckline leaves some skin exposed. Ding: The lower pockets lack zippers, making them useless for anything but hands. $200; 14.1 oz. (w’s M); m’s S-XL, w’s S-XL; smartwool.com
