Marmot ROM Jacket
When mountain temps spike in 20-degree increments as you zip from sun to windy spittle and back, you expect multiple layer changes. Not with the ROM (pictured at left), which stayed on my back throughout a Grand Traverse of the Tetons. Stretchy Gore Windstopper, combined with breathable swatches beneath the arms, makes the ROM (stands for range of motion) great for active pursuits in variable conditions. Bonus: Handwarmer pockets don’t conflict with pack straps or harness. $185; 1 lb. 2 oz. (m’s M);

[light crampons]
Kahtoola MICROspikes
This was a huge snow year throughout the Rockies, which meant even my summer hikes and traverses included ice and snowfields. I packed these rugged mini-crampons and stretched them over running shoes, approach shoes, and hiking boots to cross slippery passes and climb low-angle gullies. $60; 12.5 oz. (M);

Patagonia R1 Hoody
Chilled? Slip your thumbs in the sleeves, throw on the hood, and zip it up to nose level. Too warm? Unzip to the navel and hike the sleeves. I’ve lived in this thing from Rainier to the Alps to the overstuffed chairs at the base lodge. Green bonus: High recycled content. $149; 11.5 oz (m’s M);

La Sportiva Ganda Guides
When I completed the Grand Traverse—summiting the 10 highest peaks in the Tetons in one three-day push—these boots were the secret. Their cushion and stability rival my favorite hikers, yet they’re grippy and precise enough for climbing 5.8. Fit is glove-perfect, and they propel you along as well as a dedicated trail shoe. $235; 2 lbs. 2 oz. (m’s 43);

Marmot Drakon 35
It looks small, but I hauled everything I needed for huge days in the Tetons (it did force me to pack light, which my quads appreciated). I thought the long, duffel-style center zipper was gimmicky at first, but I used it constantly for quick access to my down jacket, snacks, and gloves. $130; 2 lbs. 9 oz.;
