[women’s choice]
Fit, fit, fit. That’s what impresses our female testers, and the Speed Light delivers with a slim—but not restrictive—form-flattering cut. After two weeks of hiking in the Trinity Alps, a week of rain in Mendocino, and a winter of lift-accessed skiing in Lake Tahoe, our California tester says the Speed Light has just the right amount of room in the chest and shoulders. And, in contrast to many of the jackets here, the sleeves aren’t overly long—reducing bulk and improving cuff fit with gloves. (Male testers also praised the fit and unrestricted movement.) Both genders praised the low weight, harness-friendly, shorter-than-normal cut, and bomber waterproofing (thanks to Gore-Tex Pro Shell). Deep handwarmer pockets have nine-inch zippers—great for stuffing gloves and a neck gaiter—but they’re positioned too low to be useful with a pack on. $425; 11 oz. (w’s M); m’s S-XXL, w’s XS-L; marmot.com
