Gear Review: Mammut Togir/Togira Light Climbing Harness

Climbing Magazine's favorite alpine harness of 2011.

The Swiss are world leaders in fondue, watches—and lightning-fast alpine ascents. It’s logical, then, that Swiss manufacturer Mammut would crank out our favorite alpine harness of the year. The stripped-down Togir Light (Togira Light is the women’s model) has all of the essentials with none of the fluff: four easy-to-rack gear loops, two attachments for ice screw clippers, and a quick-release leg-loop buckle for dropping your drawers.

A simple piece of plastic protects the high-wear leg-loop connection from abrasion. The Togir Light shaves ounces in padding, but was still plenty comfortable for sport-climbing falls at Shelf Road, Colorado. “I fell on many climbs and never felt a pinch,” says our tester.

One caveat: The leg loops are elasticized for stretch but aren’t adjustable, so this isn’t the harness for expeditions where clothing changes are common. But for one-day alpine routes or for rock climbers with alpine aspirations, this harness is an ultralight all-arounder.
