Gear Review: L.L. Bean Trail Model Rain Jacket

Absolute rain protection in a well-priced package

Rarely have we seen such absolute rain protection in such a well-priced package. “It rained so much we thought of digging moats around the tent,” moaned one damp tester after a week on the Oregon Coast Trail. “But this superlight 2.5-layer shell was impenetrable.”

The caveat is limited breathability and venting. While a textured ceramic inner material minimizes clamminess against your skin, vigorous hiking results in sauna-like conditions. You get mesh-lined pockets that double as vents, but no pit zips—that would jack the price.

Our advice: Get this shell for emergency rain protection or for mostly sedentary pursuits, like fishing or car camping—or if you want a big-boy cut. The hem and cuffs are adjustable, as is the non-helmet-compatible hood. Note: The Velcro-sealed storm flap let rain through the non-waterproof zipper in monsoon conditions.
