Gear Review: L.L. Bean Packaway Pullover Jacket

This bargain jacket costs less than $100--and it was worthy of an AT thru-hike.

“I hiked the entire Appalachian Trail with this baby,” says our tester. “I used it in some fashion every single day, either on my body or under my head at night.” The light layer of PrimaLoft One insulation is ideal for layering in temps down to 40°F or as a camp jacket in temps around 60. The 20-denier ripstop nylon has a thin PU coating on the inner face and a DWR on the outer that rebuffs light precipitation.

“The sternum-length zipper allowed for a bit of venting when I wore the jacket under a shell on a nasty day (whipping winds and sideways sleet) climbing Clingman’s Dome,” she says. “And when zipped, the high collar snuggled under my chin to seal out drafts.” Cuffs are finished with stretchy elastic, nice for pushing the sleeves up for air conditioning. The Pullover packs down to the size of a pair of socks.

Ding: The handwarmer pockets get overlapped by a pack hipbelt.
