Gear Review: Beal Tiger 10mm Climbing Rope

A 10mm rope that's not too stiff and not too flexible with a Golden Dry treatment for added durability and water resistance.

One Colorado tester dubbed this the “Goldilocks” rope: not too stiff, not too flexible, just right. “At 10mm, this rope is fatter than what many ice climbers use,” she says, “but after it stood up to a couple crampon nicks from errant foot placements in the Indian Peaks in Colorado, I appreciated the added durability.”

Another perk: Beal’s Golden Dry treatment, which coats each nylon filament in the sheath as well as the core with a durable, hydrophobic layer. Result? Even after getting buried in wet snow, the rope knotted and clipped as smooth as silk. At 61 grams per meter, this rope is relatively heavy, but a tester says that “it was one of the only ropes I used last winter that didn’t fuzz up after just a few high-abrasion pitches.”
