Felt liners, like those on the Sorels, are great for temps down to about zero. But in colder climes, go for this boot, made from rubber-covered closed-cell foam. It’s less breathable, but warmer (and lighter). “And it’s virtually immune to abuse,” says a Vermont tester who’s worn her pair through five winters, in temps down to -15°F.

The EVA midsole is supportive with good rebound: On short hikes over rolling Adirondack terrain, testers pulled sleds and carried up to 35 pounds. Broad lugs provide traction for snow stomping in all but steep terrain. Fit is roomy. $120; 3 lbs.; m’s 5-15; muckbootsonline.com
