Gear Review: Montane Tourbillon Event Stretch Gaiter

The ultimate tall, tough gaiters for the shoulder season.

by: Dan Larson

Best Protection
Tall and tough, yet breathable and flexible, the Tourbillon provides the perfect protection for shoulder-season and winter backpacking and climbing. Made mostly of eVent waterproof/breathable fabric, the Tourbillon also includes panels of stretchy nylon where flexibility is needed most—in the ankles and at the top of the calves. A tester put one of his tried and true waterproof/breathable gaiters (a different brand) on one leg and the Tourbillon on the other. “I was postholing for a few hours getting down off a ridge, routefinding in thigh-high, melting snow and pouring rain, and the Tourbillion breathed noticeably better and kept my right leg drier than the other,” he says. “It also felt more comfortable—especially at the top hem behind the knee.” Bonus: A diagonal Velcro opening crosses over your boots’ lacing, so you can open it a few inches from the bottom and easily retie boots. $99; 8 oz.
