Gear Review: Columbia Noble Falls Trapper Hat

A hat that's durable for the long, multi-day haul.

Warmest Hat
If your winter includes multiday backcountry trips in freezing to deep-freezing temps (30°F to -10°F), nab the Noble Falls Trapper. It’s unbelievably warm, thanks to a cozy faux fur liner and long, wind-blocking earflaps that secure tightly under the chin with a buckle closure. And it features a rain- and stain-resistant coating, which we pushed to its limit with orange juice (oops) and wearing it in the shower (both juice and water beaded off, but under a full-on downpour the hat finally got soaked). Our tester praised the warmth-to-weight ratio: “It’s insanely light and extremely packable, so even when I know I’ll be wearing a technical beanie under a helmet while skiing or climbing, this always finds its way into my pack.” It’s too warm for skinning in most conditions, but it doesn’t get clammy even if you do work up a sweat. Bonus: Testers love sleeping in it. “The faux fur is lovely next to skin,” says one. $40; 4.5 oz.; unisex S/M–L/XL; columbia.com
