Backpacker Magazine – Fall Gear Guide 2009
This '08 Editors' Choice Award winner is still a staff favorite.
Best All-Purpose
We gave this shell an Editors' Choice Award (April 2008), and a year and a half later it's still the jacket we reach for when we want bomber protection from the elements, big-trip durability, and awesome breathability.
Credit the eVent shell and British designers who clearly know something about bad weather. Bonus: It's light enough that you can carry it year-round. $300; 1 lb.; men's S-XXL, women's 8-16; rab.uk.com

I picked up this shell a year ago after backpacker's reviews. I got it for $220. eVent is not just hype. the breathability is more than great. RAB makes the best hoods. It's so versatile - as a winter shell over insulation or as a summer rain coat.

The reader's comments dated Feb 02, 2010 reflects a rather sad case of sour grapes and the attitude reflects a fear-based approach to great articles. Keep up the great work Backpacker!

If you see it on Backpacker, unless you are a mtn climber, you probably can get something as good a lot cheaper. Look elsewhere. A lot of Bkpr gear is for people with more money than brains. I can find almost everything I need at LL Bean with a few --and only a few---other items at REI. I read Bkpr reviews for the humor.
