Backpacker Magazine – Fall Gear Guide 2009
These 800-fill down booties come complete with a detachable outer layer.
Warm feet can make the difference between a bad trip and a great one. Make it the latter with these toasters. "The 800-fill down inner liners are puffy and warm," said one tester, "and unlike many booties I've worn, there's also a layer of down underfoot." The inners are great for wearing to bed; the smooth bottoms let them slide right into your bag. The cuff comes up to mid-shin for maximum warmth, but just pop open the snaps and fold down the tops to convert them to low-cuts for warmer temps or tent lounging.
For venturing outside, slip on the outer layer, a DWR-treated shell made with water-resistant Epic by Nextec fabric. The shell has both a top and ankle adjustment, and a quarter-inch-thick layer of closed cell foam in the sticky, rubberized sole protects the bottom. They're pricy, but worth the splurge if you camp in frigid temps. $85; 9 oz.; featheredfriends.com
