See the Himalayan giants--and cross three passes more than 17,000 feet high--on this off-the-radar route through the Khumbu region.

Getting There
From Kathmandu, fly to Lukla on Yeti Airways (from $100 one way; yetiairways.com).

Permit
Pick up a TIMS independent trekking permit ($10/person; taan.org.np) in Kathmandu.
Season Autumn boasts the clearest skies, but highest traffic. April has slightly fewer crowds, and blooming flowers.

Itinerary Many hikers go counterclockwise, since the route climbs more gradually in that direction. Go against the grain. Just take your time to get to Thame—the trip unfolds better, with more spectacular views, going east. Ideally, budget a full month to give yourself time for side trips, weather delays, and sick days.

Teahouses
Expect to pay up to $6 per night for a double room, and $3-$8 for meals.

Island Peak $400 permit (and guide/gear) available in Chukkung. Get almost as high—no fee or climbing skill required—by scrambling to the top of Chukkung Tse, a 19,282-foot hill above town.
Map Get the Schneider 1:50,000 series Khumbu Himal in Namche Bazaar.

Guidebook Trekking in the Everest Region, by Jamie McGuinness, 5th edition ($16).

Porter/guide Most of the eager guides crowding arrivals at the Lukla airport are competent, but get a personal recommendation from your hotel operator (ask for Dawa Sherpa from Bhojpur!). Expect to pay $20 a day, plus a 20-percent tip.

Be careful what you wish for.
The cliché echoes in my head as I stare numbly at the bushes and boulders receding in the distance. My partner Leah Gallant and I are one week into a month-long circuit of the Everest region of Nepal, stopped dead in our tracks at 14,000 feet in an isolated valley close to the Tibetan border. The trail, which has grown progressively more indistinct and narrow over the last four hours, has finally vanished into a web of animal paths that fade in the brush. Around us, arid foothills fold up into craggy peaks of neck-straining scale. The irony is painfully obvious: We’ve come in search of something most trekkers in the Khumbu never experience—something akin to raw wilderness—and we’re getting more than we bargained for.

It’s an unheard-of problem elsewhere in the Everest area, where the well-trod trails are as wide as a highway lane, worn by centuries of yak trains and four decades of trekker traffic. Not here. After two days of hiking up the Bhote Kosi valley, on the western side of Sagarmatha National Park, we’ve strayed far enough from the high-use areas that the route forward is too faint to follow. I know we can ask for help, but that seems almost as bad as getting lost. Leah has no such reservations.

“Let’s wait for Dawa,” she says. Dawa is our porter. A porter I didn’t want to hire. A porter I’m still not sure I want. It feels like cheating. Plus, our communication strains the limits of my Nepali phrase book, and it seems that regardless of the question, Dawa’s answer is always a big grin and the same words, “Yeah, yeah, no problem.” I’m not even sure he’s ever traveled this route.

It’s getting late, and clouds are beginning to gather around the peaks. Somewhere in the valley ahead of us is Lungde, the last tiny hamlet that offers shelter, a safe haven where we can sleep before heading over the 17,500-foot pass beyond. We’re not facing a crisis, exactly, but it’s not the kind of place to be wandering around in the dark, in subfreezing weather, without a tent or stove.

Just then, Dawa catches sight of us and calls out from down the hill.

“Sister! Justin! This way,” Dawa says, stomping through the knee-high underbrush with Leah’s pack.

“Are you sure, Dawa?” I ask.

“Yeah, yeah, no problem.”

I trekked to Tengboche Monastery from Jiri with Sanjib flying back from Lukla. I've done this several times before as a trek leader but thistime it was a private trip and it was one of the best yet. Our guide Sanjib Adhikari was first rate and had an excellent command of English and out porters Ram and Bhola Kumar was also extremely good. Accommodation in the lodges was of a generally high standard and some, especially The Nest in Namche and the Khumbu Lodge in Lukla were outstanding. I can also warmly recommend the Kathmandu hotel Nepalaya , a real home from home. Well done Sanjib, I would be happy to travel with your outfit again

Clear blue skies and fantastic vistas every day in late October 2012. My wife and I trekked with Independent trekking guide, Mr Sanjib. We had one Guide Mr. Sanjib and one Porter and trekked and talked a took photos and rested when we wanted to. I was 51 at the time and found the trek to be very doable. There were trekkers much older than me that accomplished it as well. In the teahouse dining rooms each evening, we enjoyed the Sanjib of travelers from the most diverse nationalities I have ever encountered in such a short time frame. There seemed to be an almost equal number of females as males. The menus are surprisingly full given that almost all of the food must be carried in. Every day brings rewarding scenery and passage through isolated villages. After Dingbhoche, the villages are there only to service the trekkers and the altitudes are probably to high to support farming. All in all a wonderful fulfilling experience. With sanjib , personal and experienced service. He started as a porter, worked up to being a guide in company and is now he is independent trekking guide Email-:sanjib-adhikari@hotmail.com

A fabulous trek organized by Independent trekking guide Sanjib for the second half of April 2013. Flew to Lukla - survived the landing and our guide Sanjib, who was always cheerful and helpful, led the two of us (69 and 67) to EBC via the stunning Gokyo lakes route and over the Cho La pass. Not the standard route - in fact a bit more challenging, but worth the extra effort as the scenery was stunning. Being off the standard route meant fewer people and less organized paths so that feeling of remoteness was present.
The climax was to climb Kala Pathar prior to arriving at EBC and see the stunning Mt Everest. Base Camp allowed us to reflect on putting sites to all the names we had read about in the Everest epic stories.
Altogether a fabulous trip, thank you Mr Sanjib for faultless organization both before and during the trek.

There is no substitute for personalized attention. I traveled to Nepal to visit Everest Base Camp. I traveled alone and had certain trepidation about traveling on my own, but I also knew I wanted to escape the pressures of trekking in a large group. Altitude and safety are paramount on mountain treks and I did not want to end-up hyperventilating trying to keep-up with faster, fitter, trekkers.
Even though, I have altitude experience, I relied heavily on my guide's advice regarding what to eat, pace, and hydration. I have climbed and summitted Mt. Kilimanjaro, so I was confident I could complete this trek, but nothing can prepare you for the terrain of the Hymalayas. it is truly a humbling experience.
Mr. Adhikari came highly recommended by other trekkers, who were only too willing to write positive and detailed letters of recommendation. I found that all their recommendations were more than true. Mr. Adhikari has been to Everest Base Camp more than 50 plus times, as a woman traveling alone, I found his level of professionalism refreshing. I cannot count the times, Mr. sanjib Adhikari truly saved me from my inexperienced trekking self. Anything from ensuring I would.
not be run over by a Yak, horse, or donkey to keeping me focused on the difficult terrain, and somehow ensuring I stopped long enough to enjoy the scenery (in spite of my exhaustion). I shudder to think what my trek would have been like if I'd been just another trekker in a large group. I have to comment that I have never been so healthy-stomach wise at altitude.
Mr. Adhikari explains that when organizing for larger groups, he makes provisions for trekkers like me who tend to walk at a slower pace. I thought for sure that, this time, my ambition had superseded my ability, but thanks to Mr. Adhikari, my long time dream of seeing Everest Base Camp first hand came true. I was able to spend time in the rarified air and observe camp life, took plenty of pictures, and asked Mr. Adhikari numerous questions about his experiences around the area.
I was very aware of the economic implications of traveling with a Nepali Operator vs. a foreign trekking company. I wanted my trip not to only be a self-serving adventure, but numerous travel books suggest that traveling with a Nepali Operator does ensure more of the money goes and stays into the Nepali economy. I was unsure how the whole experience would unfold, but I am staying here and going to Annapurna Base Camp with the same operator. Mr. adhikari seems to be grounded on the mountain community ad well as in Kathmandu. It was reassuring to see he has good and long standing relationships with other guides and the mountain community.
