Photographer Ethan Welty's Home Range: The North Cascades

Join photographer Ethan Welty on a photo tour of Washington's North Cascades. Ethan shows off not only his favorite spots in North Cascades National Park, but also some hikes and views in the wilderness areas that surround the park.

"I'm a Boulder-based but Seattle-born photographer and research scientist with a deep love (obsession?) with Washington's North Cascades. These shy and beautiful mountains inspired me to rope up, make a career of taking pictures, and go back to school to study glaciers at the University of Colorado. Here I share some of my favorite moments exploring my "home range" in the hope that the photographs (a) make you jealous, (b) inspire you to explore your own home range, and (c) help you fall in love with mine."

Perched on the rocky summit of Hidden Lake Peak,
Stephen Byrne peers down into the depths of the Cascade River drainage. North Cascades National Park - extending into the alpine up and right - ends at this ridge, but conservation advocates propose expanding the park to include (and permanently protect) the pristine river and old-growth forest below. Visit the American Alps Legacy Project for more information.
