Lightning Lake in Rock Creek Basin

ut

Star Star Star Star Star

Distance: 16.2 miles

A 2-night trip to Lightning Lake, in the Rock Creek Basin.
  • The icy trail
  • Going lightweight
  • Not enough time
  • Flowers and lichen
  • Midday resting place.
  • Looking south
  • Looking east at sunset
  • Time to skeedaddle
  • Rocky Sea Pass
  • A little dicey
  • Coleman boots

I got off work at noon on Friday, was on the trail by 3:10, and had my first camp near Carolyn Lake that evening.  The next day I went to Jack and Jill Lakes but didn't find a place I wanted to camp.  I ended up at Lightning Lake that night.  Clouds and ominous weather rolled in that night.  My planned dayhike on July 4 had to be cancelled and instead I packed out to my car.  It snowed that day.  That's the Uintas for you: snow on July 4.  (Note: these tracks are compiled from previous trips.  My GPS ran out of batteries!)
