Turn right and climb the embankment on the right. The path travels between the railroad tracks and the edge of the bluffs and offers great views of the Channel Islands National Park to the south. Watch for coastal bottlenose dolphins, California sea lions and gray whales.

Directly southeast of the pier is a harbor seal rookery that typically holds around 300 pinnipeds during the pupping season from December through May. You can watch mothers nursing their pups from up above on the bluff.

Turn left and descend the hill. Keep an eye out for the oil that oozes out of the coastal bluffs. This is where the Chumash Indians caulked there tomols (dugout canoes).

Scan the edge of the water for the tarpits (big slabs of mostly hardened tar that softens in the heat). Just south of the tarpits are some of the best tide pools in southern California. Shorebirds (Willets, Black-bellied Plovers, Marbled Godwits and Sanderlings) fly overhead.
