We started early in the morning to avoid the crowd visitors of the falls in the later hours of the day. It takes about 2.5 hours to get to the upper falls.
From there we followed 9 or 10 blue diamond marks to get to the ridge with a log road on the top. From there we turned left and hiked for another one hour or so toward the lake on the flat log road. The road continues and enters the park again. At the end of the rode we made a right turn following the signs and after another 20 minutes we got to the lake.
We couldn’t find the trail to the Jay Lake at the northern end of the Wallace Lake so stopped by the Wallace Lake and relaxed for half an hour.
From the lake, beck to the trail head is about 3 to 4 hours of easy hike. Because of the mud holes on the upper parts of the trail, you might still find your gaiter quite useful.
In the afternoon we chose the old rail road trail, which is not used by the numerous visitors of the falls, hiking on the Woody trail.
