The hike initially starts in a deep forrest where not much sun light makes it through. The trail is easy to follow with lots of up and downs but not excessively so. At point 004 the trail splits. Keep to the Lakes Trail for a more moderate route, the trail to the Hump is steeper (according to rangers).
Near the Watchtower the trees fade away and the remainder of the scenery is treeless, with granite peaks for miles. One portion after the Watchtower offers great views of near straight down views. Heather Lake and Aster Lake are indeed beautiful, clear lakes that reflect the mountains above. We ate lunch at a beautiful overlook of Aster Lake (007). We returned back to the trail head from here, but the total trip from trail head to Pear Lake should be approximately 13.4 miles if you wish to continue.
This hike has a significant elevation gain, but it was pretty spaced out so it did not feel strenous, I would rate it more moderate.
A detailed map is available from the Lodgepole Visitor's Station.
