New York City, NY: Slide Mountain via Curtis-Ormsbee Trail

ny

Star Star Star Star Star

Summit a Catskills favorite, Slide Mountain, on this 6.7-mile loop with views of the Shawangunks and Taconics.

The hike up New York’s Slide Mountain is a Catskills favorite, but there’s good reason for its popularity: From its densely forested summit, hikers can gaze at everything from the Shawangunks to the Taconics. See for yourself on this strenuous 6.7-mile loop hike up the peak’s most scenic approach. Start at 2,100 feet at the Phoenicia-East Branch Trailhead and hike south 1.5 miles to the Curtis-Ormsbee Trail junction—there, a stone monument commemorates the two men who planned the trail, both of whom died in a 1900 Mt. Washington snowstorm. Turn east and continue 1 mile to a rocky outcropping with vistas of the Lone, Table, and Rocky mountains, then join the red-blazed Wittenberg-Cornell-Slide Trail for the .8-mile jog to the top. Once among the 4,180-foot summit’s red spruce, balsam fir, mountain ash, and yellow birch, enjoy a panorama of at least 70 other peaks, the Hudson Valley, and the distant Berkshires. Take the Wittenberg-Cornell-Slide Trail 2.8 miles back to your car. Info: (845) 256-3000; www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/9150.html Hike provided by the Catskill Mountain Club
