Jackson, WY: Island Lake Loop

wy

Star Star Star Star Star

Connect a string of alpine lakes on this classic 35-mile loop in the Wind River Range.

The towering granite spires of the Wind River Range are a mecca for climbers, but the abundant wildlife, 1,500 alpine lakes, and seemingly endless trail network make this 100-mile-long swath of Wyoming wilderness equally attractive to backpackers.

This classic 35-mile loop from the Elkhart Park trailhead connects a number of high lakes, including Little Seneca, Island, and Summit. Follow Trails #119 and #123 to Seneca Lake and the intersection with the Continental Divide Trail. Hike northwest 11 miles before turning off near Summit Lake onto Trail #165 to head back to the trailhead.

Be sure to pack your fly rod: During the Depression, Finis Mitchell hauled barrels of trout on horse pack trains to remote backcountry lakes that now team with rainbow and cutthroat.
