The mighty James River begins its majestic journey in Botetourt County and winds its way through the Blue Ridge Mountains on its way to the sea. The unspoiled beauty of the river is more accessible than ever through the Upper James River Water Trail. Paddlers, anglers and families can get back to nature and enjoy the sights and sounds of the Upper James
Great canoe/kayak and tube section of James River. Float from Springwood to Buchanan (~3 miles) or from Buchanan to Arcadia (~7 miles), or combine them both for ~10 miles.
- Springwood put in/take out is access off Rt. 630 (Springwood Rd.) and has a public boat landing sign.
- Buchanan put in/take out is located directly in town on Rt. 11/43. Twin River Outfitters is at this access point.
- Arcadia put in/take out is located at a public boat landing on Rt. 614.
Twin River Outfitters provide tube/canoe/kayak rentals.
Riders Up Outfitters provides canoe/kayak rentals, and
Wilderness Adventure provides guided canoe/kayak trips.
Water Levels - These guages are color coded to let you know if the water level is adequate for paddling (not too high). Be advised this is an estimate and does not serve as a substitute for good judgment - when in doubt, don't go.
