From Telluride, CO take 145 South to the Lizard Head Wilderness Area. After Trout Lake and the first Lizard Head rest area make a right onto CR 535 (Dunton Rd.). Drive 3 miles up Dunton Rd. to the Kilpacker Trailhead. You can park your car here for the day of overnight. There are also a few campsites at Kilpacker Trail Head if you choose to camp the night before the hike.
Kilpacker Trail is just over 6 miles one way and takes about 3:30 to 4 hours to Navajo Lake. This trail is marked well, just follow the signs for Navajo Lake. Navajo Lake also provides access to 2 out of the 3 14,000 foot peaks that surround the basin. El Diente is the only peak that is not easily summited from Navajo Basin. You can summit El Diente from a trailhead earlier on, about 2.5 miles from the start of Kilpacker Trail.
