This is a great trip if you want to do a kayaking overnight. There are three campsites on Bear Island, which are right on the trail that can be reserved. The sites are 12, 13, and 14. I would recommend getting site 12, as it is the only one with any shade. The downside to these campsites are that they are not on the beach and it is a difficult hike to get to any of the island facilities or to the beach. We ended up kayaking to the very end of the trail to get to the beach. You have to be careful to time the tides right, otherwise you will be slogging through the water.
After having made the trip, I would recommend getting campsite 7. This site is at the very end of the trail and has easy beach access. The site also had a nice picnic table. This site is also only a 10 minute walk to the restroom/shower facilities.
Overall, this makes a nice trip, just be forewarned you will be bringing back a lot of sand with you.
