Time requirements
This greenway can be completed completely within a few hours. There are many fine stopping points along the way. The map provided shows the complete trail from
Hotel Roanoke to Valley View Mall. Many fine shopping opportunities await, including Target, Best Buy, Barnes and Noble, and even a Starbucks.
Directions to the trailhead
Leave Hotel Roanoke at the lower parking lot. Cross Wells at Commonwealth and you will find a sign noting the beginning of the Lick Run Greenway.
Trail/Trip descriptions
This is a mostly flat, well marked trail. There are many roads to be crossed along the way, but for the most part, it is a nice uninterupted spot to take a nice stroll. The beginning and the end sections are well lit. However, be aware that the middle two miles are not lit by artificial lights. Most of the trail follows a lovely stream. There is a wonderful view of Mill Mountain and the Mill Mountain Star about halfway along the greenway.
Notes/Add-ons
The Lick Run Greenway does not take you directly to the site, but behind the Hotel Roanoke is a fitting tribute to the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The statue was recently erected and the bridge, which crosses over the roalroad tracks to Downtown Roanoke, was recently renamed for Dr. King. Ask someone at the front desk how you can visit this very special place.
While walking in the area, be sure to stop by the
O. Winston Link Museum and the
Roanoke City Visitor's Center. A stop here is certainly worth your time. The O. Winston Link Museum was opened in 2004 and has a permanent and rotating gallery of the famous photographers work. The Visitor's Center is an excellent place to stop to find out more about Roanoke, including places to visit, shop and dine.
