Time requirements
The trail can be shortened or added to as there are many side trails and scenic turn arounds available. However, if you plan to trek the entire greenway, set aside at least 2 hours for a full round trip.
Directions to trailhead
Find the Dan Wright Trailhead of the Murray Run Greenway located on Grandin Road, beside the tennis courts at Shriner Park. Plenty of parking is available.
Trail/ Trip descriptions
The terrain of this trail goes through many changes. It often opens up into residential areas and busy roads. Be aware and hold little one's hands. A road bike may be able to make most of the trip, but not the grade change on the trails near Fishburn Park. There are also many places to stop and play, if the young ones get tired of walking.
Notes/Add-ons
At the end of the greenway, Colonial Avenue, you might find nourishment to you left. One mile on the left, you will find
The Fresh Market. To the right, consider stopping by the
Virginia Western Community Arboretum. This free garden is maintained by master gardeners, community members, and local college students.
On your trip home, you'll be hungry for sure. Stop by the
Roanoke Natural Foods Co-op. If you get there by 4, the Happy Belly Deli will still be open. Stop in for a selection of organic yummies. They also have a full juice/coffee/tea bar. Lots of wonderful things to choose from.
There are many stops along the Murray Run Greenway, including tennis courts, places for creek exploring, birdwatching, picnic shelter, restrooms (Shrine Hill Park) and 9-hole disc golf course.
