I just wanted to prove that I made it, having been frustrated the day before.

I thought the ice patterns were pretty. This was the only clear spot on the lake, right by the outlet.

On May 31 the lake was still covered in ice and snow. There were even some snowmobile tracks visible. Clearly you wound't want to cross the lake on this day, not with the ice that decayed.

This is as far as I got that first day. I was mostly looking for a place to camp and there was less and less clear ground. I had to turn back.

I actually had a homemade tent, too, but I wanted to try my bivy/poncho/tarp setup. It worked fine, which wasn't all that hard to do since there was no rain, wind, snow, or grizzly stampede.
Once I made the last creek crossing--the one without a bridge--I had the place all to myself. It was wonderful. Despite the threatening clouds, I had only a spinkling of rain. After that it was all dry. I probably could not have crossed the creek with such high runoff, but I lost the trail and came to the creek about 200 yards too far to the north. That was lucky, however, because there was a log jam right at the spot. This was only an overnighter, but it was my second trip of the year. For me, that's a good start to the season.
