Stretching 26.5 miles from McKenzie Bridge to Fish Lake, the McKenzie River National Scenic Trail parallels the McKenzie River as it travels past 600-year-old Douglas fir forests, lava flows, and several tributary creeks. Sample a section of this trail on a 3-mile out-and-back that connects Belknap Springs to NFD 2650 Road.
From the Belknap Springs Resort parking area, walk south roughly 650 feet to connect with the well-maintained trail, which runs between the river and OR 126. Turn left and hike northeast on the mostly-flat path. After paralleling the highway for 500 feet, the trail dips into mossy forest and leads north along the river bed. After half a mile, cross a small creek on a plank bridge, then hike past picturesque campsites. The remaining 0.8 mile to the turnaround point crosses Scott Creek and Boulder Creek on log bridges and intersects the McKenzie River at NFD 2650 Road. Relax by the river before starting the return trip to Belknap Springs.
