About a 30 mile drive east of Atoka, Oklahoma is the McGee Creek National Scenic Recreation Area (NSRA). This area is 8900 acres and offers hiking, backpacking, mountain biking and equestrian trails. Several established campsites are available allowing multiple options for overnight trips. Elevations range from about 600 ft near the lake to about 1100 feet in the northeastern portion of the NSRA. The trails are closed to motorized vehicles. The trails near the entrance see some day hikers, but further out in the recreation area provides good solitude. Water can be an issue if it has not rained recently, but Box Spring is a reliable source. Camping near the lake would be a good option for access to water as well.

For a more detailed report, visit:
http://www.wakefieldwanderings.com
