Soldiers Pass Trail, Sedona, Arizona 2009-03-25:

For our midweek hike, we decided to hike the lower part of Soldier's Pass Trail. The last time we hiked this trail, we'd started at the end of the jeep trail (i.e., about 1.25 miles north of the official trailhead) to do a loop around Cibola Mittens, and hiked by all the interesting spots in the dark. This time, we started at the official trailhead. We hiked the lower part of Soldiers Pass Trail, visiting Devil's Kitchen sinkhole and the Seven Sacred Pools. Not far from where the jeep trail ends, we went off-trail to explore a path that appears to lead to a closer vista of an arch in the cliff wall of Brins Ridge. The path follows a slickrock wash, and appears to eventually lead up to Cibola Mittens. The view of the arch from this trail is pretty good. After eating lunch, we returned the way we came, stopping at Seven Sacred Pools to snap a few shots while it was momentarily tourist-free.
