A nice view of Echo Cliffs may be had from this part of the trail. As I passed by this spot, two climbers were preparing to climb this wall. Look for "Balanced Rock," one of the many named formations in this area, above the rim of the canyon.

Split Rock trail camp and picnic area. There is water here seasonally (but the creek was nearly dry this April.) It is customary for hikers to walk through the split rock. Just past the camp a marked but unmaintained trail leads to Balanced Rock.

At a sharp bend in the trail, a sign on the right marks the spur trail to Sandstone Peak. Check steps help you begin the climb, which is quite steep in places. Some easy scrambling brings you to the top.

Here the Backbone trail turns off to the right towards Yerba Buena road at an easily missed junction; a parking lot 0.4 miles down this trail marks the terminus of one section of the Backbone trail. Our route goes straight ahead on the Mishe Mokwa trail.
Sandstone Peak

This peak (which is composed of volcanic rock, not sandstone) is called "Mt. Allen," by the Boy Scouts who installed the elaborate register box just below the highest point. When you have finished enjoying the view, retrace your steps to the trail.

This is a pleasant hike of about 6 miles, easily done in two or three hours but worth a half day of exploring and enjoying the views. Be prepared for a lot of ups and downs as the trail circles around the country north of the peak. There is a lot of shade along the trail, and some unusual plants grow here. The weird volcanic peaks and rock outcrops are another unusual feature of this area. The view from Sandstone Peak (the high point of the Santa Monica Mountains) is first rate. Directions:From Santa Monica, take the Pacific Coast Highway to Yerba Buena Road, about 1 mile past the Ventura County line. The turnoff is by a popular local eatery and seafood market, Neptune's Net. Go north on Yerba Buena (carefully, since it is narrow and curvy) for nearly 6.5 miles to the parking lot, on your left. A sign marks the turn into the lot, but it is somewhat hard to see. (At 5.4 miles is the Circle X Ranch Park headquarters and car campground.)
