|NATIONAL PARKS QUICKLINKS|
This very scenic hike begins in the chaparral and ends in the pines near 7000'+ Reyes Peak. Along the way you will pass two nice backcountry camps, and your legs will get a good workout as you ascend and then descend over 2500 feet of elevation. On a clear day, there are very fine views to the south from the Pine Mountain Road. Beautiful car camp sites -- perhaps the best in Los Padres -- are found near the upper trailhead. It can be hard to find a space on weekends. The road is subject to winter closure. This is an excellent time to carry your backpack up the trail and enjoy a campout on top, perhaps in the snow. (Snow is not uncommon at the elevation of Chorro Grande camp during the winter.) Directions: From Ventura, take Highway 33 to Ojai, and continue north on 33 from its junction with Highway 150 at the Vons shopping center. The Chorro Grande trailhead is at mile marker 36.60, or 10.76 miles past the turnoff to the Rose Valley recreation area.
