Ojai: The Pines Camp.
A 5 mile round trip hike through the chaparral to a backcountry camp nestled in a grove
of pine trees. These trees have been replanted several times after being
destroyed by fire. The trail first ascends gently up Horn Canyon and then climbs
steeply out of the canyon to The Pines Camp. Along the way are fine views of
the Upper Ojai Valley and, on a clear day, of the Pacific Ocean. This is an
excellent wildflower hike in the spring.
Driving Directions: From downtown Ojai, proceed eastward on State Highway
150 to Carne Lane, turn left (north) and follow Carne for 1.2 miles, where it makes
a 90 degree turn to the right and becomes Thacher Road. After driving another
1.4 miles, turn left and enter the campus of Thacher School, just before the road
takes another 90 degree bend. Bear right on the paved road as you enter the
campus. Follow the road to another Y (marked by a sign saying "Upper
Campus"). Take the right branch to the intersection with a dirt road leading to the
Gymkhana Field. After crossing a seasonal stream (high clearance vehicle
recommended), proceed to the marked trailhead. Parking is limited. The total
distance from Highway 150 is 3 miles.
