This 7 mile loop provides a wild variety of experiences. You travel through everything from paved paths, to narrow switch backs. And you go from feeling completely sedluded, to hiking less than 50 feet from a major Phoenix street. In a few stretches, you will run into a lot of hikers using the mountain as a gym alternative, but for more than 50% ofthis hike you will feel like you are miles away from civilization though you are still in the heart of the city. Summary: Starting at The North Mountain visitor center, head out to shaw butte. Go up and over shaw butte, and catch follow the 306 down the back side of Shaw Butte Follow 306 until it hits 100. Follow 100 until it hits 100a and turn off onto 100a. This will lead you to the paved path up north moutain. Go up and down North Mountain, catching the 100a again on the way down. Follow the 100a back to the 100 and turn right. This will bring you back to the Visitor Center. TO TRAILHEAD:Take 51 to Cactus head West on Cactus until you hit 7th st. Turn South on 7th st, and the visitor center will be on the right.
