Block Island, Nantucket, Martha’s Vinyard, Cape Cod, and Long Island were all formed from the Terminal Moraine of the last great ice sheet. Because of it’s glacial origins Block Island has tons of amazing glacial geology including 365 kettle lakes and a large glacial outwash basin. This basin is now Rodman’s Hollow Nature Preserve. Glacial meltwater carved out the basin, and you can hike to a point where you are actually below sea level. There are beautiful plants and tons of wildlife including birds, deer and the Block Island Meadow Vole which is found only in Rodman’s Hollow on Block Island! Deer tick are present and Lyme’s disease is alive and well in RI so use an insect repellant. In August blackberries are ripe so plan on extra hiking time! For a detailed description of Rodman’s Hollow check out these links: http://www.quahog.org/attractions/index.php?id=2 http://www.nature.org/wherewework/northamerica/states/rhodeisland/preserves/art12581.html
