Cairns lead up a slickrock ramp to Crack-in-the-Rock, a 3rd-class lemon-squeezer that begins the descent from the mesa rim. (Pack a static rope for lowering packs.) Below the fissure, traverse a monstrous sand dune and a tricky boulder patch en route to the Escalante River. In the NE, Stevens Arch, the 7th largest arch in the US is located high above the confluence of the Escalante Canyon and the Stevens Canyon

A shady campsite awaits sun-soaked skin at the confluence of Coyote Canyon and the Escalante River. Rise early to begin hike up-canyon past thriving young cottonwoods and exotic sandstone formations. Look for Cliff and Lobo Arches and Coyote Natural Bridge, all seeming to defy the laws of gravity and geometry.

Break to admire pictograph panel on north wall; continue winding through the labryth-like canyon corridor where 200-foot alcolves are dwarfed by the steep canyon walls, belittling even the burliest hiker.

Jacob Hamblin Arch juts from the canyon wall, hovering over the terrain; a sandy bench marks a good campsite just W of the arch. Continue exploring for another mile or two before retracing steps to trailhead.
