Sea Caves in the Apostle Islands Open For First Time Since 2009

Visitors can walk across the frozen Lake Superior to reach them.

For the first time in five years, winter hikers can access a remarkable network of sea caves near the Apostle Islands.

The recent polar air has frozen Lake Superior solid enough that the caves, which lie 18 miles west of Bayfield, Wisconsin, can be reached on foot.  Wisconsin Public Radio
reports that as many as 1,000 people per day are taking advantage in order to glimpse what the National Park Service calls "a fairyland of needle-like icicles:"
"You’re looking at these beautiful rock formations, but they’re covered by stalactites and stalagmites made of ice,” [Apostle Islands National Lakeshore superintendent Bob Krumanaker] said.

“And then if you carefully crawl under some of that ... the ice is completely smooth and generally completely clear underneath it. So. it’s like there’s a glass floor that you can see the bottom of the lake," he said.

Planning to go?
Here's the crucial info.  Be quick, though; park officials say that these optimal conditions might only last a couple more weeks.
