Photographers Dan and Janine Patitucci, who log more than 30 hut nights a year (for the last 13 years), say the Schonibel Hut is tops.
Sleep beneath the north wall of the Matterhorn in the Schönbiel Hut. It’s a four-hour hike from Zermatt, so you can do it as an overnight or part of an extended multi-day route (it was the last stop on our scout’s traverse of the Glacier Haute Route, from Chamonix to Zermatt). Why is it tops? Great food (try the rösti), friendly hosts, comfy duvets on the beds, unmatched location perched at almost 10,000 feet (above the Zmutt glacier), and a stellar view of the Matterhorn and Dent d’Herens.
Get there: Take the Matterhorn Trail to Blatten, Zum See (Number 29 on the hiking map available at the Zermatt tourism office). Season: Spring and summer (until late September) Price: About 34 euros/night (get a discount by joining the Swiss Alpine Club, sac-cas.ch) Info:schoenbielhuette.ch
