Backpacker Magazine – January 2014
Experience the best the south has to offer: a shoreline hike in Florida, stargazing in North Carolina, and spelunking in Kentucky.
Relax near two of the tallest waterfalls east of the Rockies on an easy-access overnight. This 5.8-mile out-and-back on the Foothills Trail goes deep into the wavy green mountains concealing the Whitewater River. Start at the Whitewater Falls parking area (on SR 281, 49 miles west of Greenville). In 1.7 miles, take the combined Foothills and Lower Whitewater Trails for .5 miles, then split off onto the Lower Whitewater Trails for a .9-mile hike to a conifer-enclosed hideaway with a view of the 200-foot falls.
