Desert Cool Customer

Keep fresh and cool with this clothing tip from one of our readers.

by: BACKPACKER Editors

Reader Jim Green of Rockford, Illinois, learned this neat trick from a kitchen employee at the Grand Canyon's Phantom Ranch in Arizona:

"When hiking in hot, dry deserts, I drench several T-shirts (the heavier the better) in cold water, wear one, then fold the others and put them in a zipper-lock bag. When the desert air dries my first shirt, I replace it with one from the bag. It makes a desert hike infinitely more enjoyable. Include some wet bandannas in the bag, too. They help cool your head, and prevent sunburned ears and neck when tucked under a cap Lawrence-of-Arabia style."

Good technique. Also try the cooling bandannas, neck drape, hat inserts based on using superabsorbent polymers. The polymer is sewn into the material, soaks up to 300-800 times it's own weight in water---and can keep you cool for hours of desert hiking.

'Cool-offs' are used in construction and come in bandannas, vests, hat inserts, neck drape.
