I have used this tent for a year now and I'm still very pleased with its performance . It has stood up in high wind and rains with the help of 4 9 inch steaks . If you are 5'11 or taller the 42'' high is worth the extra ounces and I have had three guys sitting up in this tent waiting out a storm . The vestibule space worked well for 2 people and packs .

I'm on a budget. Why shouldn't I substitute a $10 pool float for a sleeping pad that costs $100 or more?

I think you should give it a whirl, Eldad! You only have 10 bucks to lose, after all! But make no mistake: your friends with real sleeping pads will be much better off. A pool float is inferior for several reasons:
