The DAILY DIRT - The nitty and the gritty of outdoor news

Click For Outdoor Kids

Mountain Hardwear sponsors program to get underprivileged kids outside—here's how you can help

Plenty of outdoor enthusiasts had their wilderness watershed moment as kids; maybe a parent or relative took them into the wild for their first camping trip, or perhaps they discovered it on their own, tramping through the woods near their own home. But the sad fact is that plenty of underprivileged kids don't have access to enriching wilderness activities.

Mountain Hardwear hopes to change that—but they need your help. Through the Mountain Hardwear Gives Back program, every time visitors click on the big yellow Send a Kid to Camp button, the gear manufacturer will donate one dollar up to a total of $35,000, which will then be divided equally between ten selected outdoors-oriented camps serving under privileged kids.

The camps are based in outdoor hotspots across the country, from California to New York. They include:
Camp Jack Hazard - Modesto, California
City Wild - Denver, Colorado
Gateway Mountain Center - Truckee, California
Girls Incorporated - Santa Fe, New Mexico
Kismet Rock Foundation - North Conway, New Hampshire
Outdoor Outreach - San Diego, California
Summer Search - New York, New York
Women's Wilderness Institute - Boulder, Colorado
Youth Enrichment Strategies - Richmond, California
Vida Verde Nature Education - Half Moon Bay, CA
But you need to hurry and get clicking—the drive ends April 15, and they need about 585 clicks to reach their goal. You're allowed to click once a day, which means each of you can contribute 23 clicks in total. At that rate, we'd only need 25 once-a-day clickers to reach that goal, so come on folks—let's get clicking!
