Canon SD 890 IS Digital Camera

A perfect, pocket-sized digital camera for any weekend warrior.

If you're tired of ripping through AAs and your hikes are mostly weekend length or shorter, Canon's SD 890 IS is your camera. It squeezes 10 megapixels, a 5x optical zoom, and image stabilization into a pocket-size unit.

Menus are intuitive, the 2.2-inch screen is big and bright, and one charge of the internal lithium-ion battery nets 300-plus photos. While the SD 890 is not technically waterproof, our sample survived a rainy night outside. It uses universal SD cards.

Bummer: Curved edges are hard to grasp securely. $350; 5.5 oz.; usa.canon.com. Reader service #107

I have the previous model of this camera and have beat the s*%t out of it and soaked it on many climbs. recently took it to the top of chimborazo and had -15F temps. it froze a little but preformed much better at that temp then my Nikon D80. battery life is usually pretty good too.

I have this camera and love it. It has many features built into it. In fact there are so many that you will probably never use half of them. The image stabilization works perfectly. The picture quality is excellent and with the face recognition technology it's nearly impossible to take a bad photo when there is a person in the shot. For wildlife or scenery shots the auto focus works very quickly and also makes it nearly impossible to take a bad picture unless you are in the fog in which case you might need to manually focus at times. The startup time for this camera is the fastest of any digital camera that I have owned and I've had 8 others. For the money you will be hard pressed to find a camera that packs as much punch in such a small package. I use Transcend class 6 SDHC 8GB cards in mine and even at its highest setting I'm able to get around 1800 photos on it. BTW Transcend cards can be found for very little money on Amazon and other places on the web. I have 8 and 16GB class 6 SDHC cards from Transcend and I have never had any problems with them. Probably one of the least expensive high quality cards you can find.

I recently took a 15 day trip to England, France, Spain, Portugal, Monaco, Morocco and Corsica and I was able to fit all of my pictures on one 8GB card; though I did back it up to my laptop at the end of each day just to be sure I didn't lose any of them. During that trip I was in the cold in Paris and the mountains of Corsica, in the rain and fog in Lisbon and in the heat of the desert with sand blowing everywhere in Morocco and the camera didn't skip a beat. I carry a spare battery with me and I was usually able to take nearly 400 photos (not all with the flash) before I had to swap out the battery for the spare. I could not be happier with this camera.
