Campground Grillin'

When you're camping close to the car, there's no need for freeze-dried. Feast like royalty at your next frontcountry campout with these nine field-tested grilling products designed for the outdoor gourmand.
  • Esbit's Foldable BBQ Box assembles in seconds, and packs down flat. Testers liked the adjustable grill height, but wished for a lid while testing on a windy evening on central Washington's Table Mountain. $90, 5 lbs. 4 oz., industrialrev.com
  • At home, we cored 24 jalapenos and stuffed them with cheese; at camp, we loaded them into the King Kooker Ultimate Jalapeno Rack, and put them on the grill uncovered. A half-hour later, cheesy peppery goodness oozed forth. $20, 20 oz., cabelas.com
  • Testers were skeptical that the Camp Chef EZ Turner might bleed all of the goodness out of the steaks, but this tool is so sharp that it makes only the tiniest of punctures so juice stays trapped. $15/2 pk., 3 oz., campchef.com
  • Grilled Walla Walla Sweet onions came out perfect in the Outset Copper Nonstick Round Grill Wok. The wok's holes allowed smokiness to permeate every bite, and the nonstick surface cleaned up with a swipe of paper towel. $25, 1 lbs. 5 oz., outsetinc.com
  • Testers swooned over the convenience of Bic's Flamedisk: rip off the foil top, light, and enjoy a charcoal substitute in a fraction of the time and hassle. The single-use ethanol-filled tray runs hot for about a half-hour. $5, 1 lb., grillingwithbic.com
  • The Snow Peak Chopping Board Set packs a carbon stainless steel utility knife (6" blade) right inside the folding cutting board/box. Testers liked the non-slip footed base, but wished the 8x10" cutting surface were larger. $40, 18 oz., snowpeak.com
  • The Camp Chef Pie Iron is "like a tiny Dutch Oven on a stick", producing amazing crunchy grilled cheese. Make more than sandwiches with Richard O'Russa's "Creative Pie Iron Cooking". Iron: $17, 2 lbs. 10 oz., campchef.com; book: $15, amazon.com
  • We nestled a couple of Weber Firecubes among our briquettes and had taste-free coals in the amount of time it takes using conventional charcoal starters. Caveat: some airflow is good, but high winds reduced performance. Weber.com, 12 oz., 24 pack/$6
Esbit's Foldable BBQ Box assembles in seconds, and packs down flat. Testers liked the adjustable grill height, but wished for a lid while testing on a windy evening on central Washington's Table Mountain. $90, 5 lbs. 4 oz., industrialrev.com

I love to use these for base camp doing deserts. Nothing like hot apple pie in the mountains after many miles on the trail and eating dehydrated foods.

You forgot to wrap them in bacon!
