my new favorite winter layer

You know when you find a piece that changes the way you dress? That's the effect Patagonia's Nano Puff Pullover had on me this winter. This ultralight, wind and water resistant, 8-ounce insulation layer replaced my fleece midlayers while also subbing in for my much heavier puffy on numerous occasions. Because of its weather resistant exterior, I also found myself wearing it as an outer layer on winter hikes and to ski. It's way warmer than it looks, but the deep chest zip provides ample venting even for high output activities like backcountry skiing and skate skiing when it's really cold. What's missing: a handwarmer pocket. I like a place to stash my phone, wallet and lip balm, and the spacious chest pocket (which the jacket packs into) looks lumpy and hangs awkwardly when loaded with those essentials. The shell fabric is 100% recycled polyester, and the entire jacket is recyclable through Patagonia's Common Threads recycling program. $150, patagonia.com

I love my nano puff! I've been wearing it on winter backpacking trips this season. On colder days (10 or below) it's a layer with a midweight fleece and a softshell, on warmer days (around 20) I've worn it over a capilene unzipped. It handles light snow really well.
