The DAILY DIRT - The nitty and the gritty of outdoor news

No Naked Hiking!

Swiss Alps town bans nude hikers

If you eschew wool and synthetic in favor of "nature's baselayer," you might want to avoid hiking in the Swiss Alps town of Appenzell: Locals politicians recently passed a law levying a fine against in-the-buff trampers. The normally neutral Swiss hope to stem the flow of enthusiastic German "naturist" hikers who love to cruise the their trails wearing only boots, pack, and a healthy sense of self-esteem.
Local government secretary Markus Dörig said: "Local people were offended by the visitors. We live in the countryside and people here want to live a quiet and undisturbed life. These incidents were really annoying."
Nude hikers love the Alps as much as clothed ones, of course, but the practice enjoys a special place in the hearts of Germans. Teutonic nudism has been on the rise since the fall of Nazism, and many German nudist organizations (called "free body culture" in German) are simply suggesting that their members take their love of the buff outside.
International Naturist Foundation Barbara Foley told the Daily Mail: “I can understand that we all have to live in this world together. But I would certainly enjoy doing the hike in the nude and I wouldn't want to be deprived of it. It's nice to feel the sun on your skin. Maybe they should designate a couple of trails and people would know they might come across naturists there.”
Hiking in the altogether might be a freeing experience, but I'd hate to imagine what happens to naturists when a surprise storm rolls up on them—they'd probably have a lot more to worry about than shrinkage.

Would you ever hike in the nude? Tell us why or why not in the comments section below.

I am fairly fond of "skinny dipping" and, I don't know, I think the same allure is there for hiking in the buff. I think people are too uptight and hung up on the connection with wearing no clothes and sexuality. That's too bad. Those who want to hike nude shouldn't be deprived of doing so because of Victorian objections. In this day and age of gratuitous violence in video games and movies and war, why should people be offended by our bodies? Strange. I do agree that people should have a place to do this or at least have a way for other people to know that they will happen upon naked people. Personal freedom is what it's really about and I don't believe it damages any larger right of society to be protected from anyones' nakedness.

I have started a blog as an assignment in my English class and I have decided to highlight my outdoor adventures; in clothes, LOL. I am trying to share my simple effort here to document some of my hiking/river floating adventures. Check it out at http://valleyproject.wordpress.com. Any nude hiking I do will not be documented to save the vision of the Victorians!

Curious to try that. I always swim nude when I camp, but have never actually hiked nude. Fun!

My first nude hike was on the Appalachian trail in West Virginia in Oct of 2001 I was alone hiked in about a mile from the car before I stripped then with my heart racing I hiked the rest of the day without seeing anyone. As I pitched my tent on "Raven Point" I lay naked on a rock as I enjoyed the sun setting... only then did a pair a F/M hikers come by and took a short detour to avoid a face to face encounter. I did the same on the way back only to dress halfway back as I worried I would offend unsuspecting hikers I may meet along the trail I wish it were just flat out legal and I would not care actually.

Freehiked Deep Creek in so. Cal. Last Friday. Two miles in and two miles out all nude. I carried my shorts and slipped them on once when I met another group on the trail, but they saw me nude before and after and really did not care. Greatest hiking experience of my life. Will do it again as soon as possible.

Naked hiking can be a truly relaxing experience, soaking up the rays, enjoying either a lonesome or a companiable time amongst nature's many places. To see what we're talking about, take a look at this regular event: http://www.naktiv.net/newt/index.html The important thing, if you're a little uncertain, is to just relax and consider trying it out sometime :-)

I write this while relaxing nude, after a skinny dip, In a remote area by a river. Most rivers create natural sand beaches by their banks, so it is like thebeach, but isolated and free of onlookers and or gawkers. Mud baths by these riverbanks are invigorating, then making the skinny dip more exhilirating!! Try it u will like it!!

Dude, I have no problem what-so-ever with "Hiking In The Buff" It's too bad that folks in the countryside are like this the world over, when it comes to being a tad bit anal to the offbeat!

Every time I go for a freehike I'm more and more convinced of how enjoyable and good and right and wonderfully beneficial naturism, and especially naked hiking, is for my life.

I've hiked naked a number of times and it is an awesome feeling! Try it, you'll like it! And it is even better if you can find a place to skinny-dip while you're hiking naked.

P.S. Don't knock it until you've tried it. You don't know what you are missing!

I have hiked nude in Yosemite National Park and it was great. I found a small waterfall and got in. Something I have always wanted to do. The sun on my body and the cold water was so fantastic. Just below the falls the water pooled and I was able to soak up the experience. I hike nude whenever the opportunity comes up.

I have hiked and mountain biked nude on a few occassions and look forward to the opportunity to do it again. My favorite is hiking in the rain. The feeling of the cool random raindrops is unlike any other. After shedding the clothing, it's not long before it feels completely normal. The worse thing about the entire experience is knowing it has to end. I dread that time of having to get dressed.
