No Naked Hiking!

Swiss Alps town bans nude hikers

If you eschew wool and synthetic in favor of "nature's baselayer," you might want to avoid hiking in the Swiss Alps town of Appenzell: Locals politicians recently passed a law levying a fine against in-the-buff trampers. The normally neutral Swiss hope to stem the flow of enthusiastic German "naturist" hikers who love to cruise the their trails wearing only boots, pack, and a healthy sense of self-esteem.
Local government secretary Markus Dörig said: "Local people were offended by the visitors. We live in the countryside and people here want to live a quiet and undisturbed life. These incidents were really annoying."
Nude hikers love the Alps as much as clothed ones, of course, but the practice enjoys a special place in the hearts of Germans. Teutonic nudism has been on the rise since the fall of Nazism, and many German nudist organizations (called "free body culture" in German) are simply suggesting that their members take their love of the buff outside.
International Naturist Foundation Barbara Foley told the Daily Mail: “I can understand that we all have to live in this world together. But I would certainly enjoy doing the hike in the nude and I wouldn't want to be deprived of it. It's nice to feel the sun on your skin. Maybe they should designate a couple of trails and people would know they might come across naturists there.”
Hiking in the altogether might be a freeing experience, but I'd hate to imagine what happens to naturists when a surprise storm rolls up on them—they'd probably have a lot more to worry about than shrinkage.

Would you ever hike in the nude? Tell us why or why not in the comments section below.

Dude, I have no problem what-so-ever with "Hiking In The Buff" It's too bad that folks in the countryside are like this the world over, when it comes to being a tad bit anal to the offbeat!

Every time I go for a freehike I'm more and more convinced of how enjoyable and good and right and wonderfully beneficial naturism, and especially naked hiking, is for my life.

I've hiked naked a number of times and it is an awesome feeling! Try it, you'll like it! And it is even better if you can find a place to skinny-dip while you're hiking naked.

P.S. Don't knock it until you've tried it. You don't know what you are missing!

I have hiked nude in Yosemite National Park and it was great. I found a small waterfall and got in. Something I have always wanted to do. The sun on my body and the cold water was so fantastic. Just below the falls the water pooled and I was able to soak up the experience. I hike nude whenever the opportunity comes up.

I have hiked and mountain biked nude on a few occassions and look forward to the opportunity to do it again. My favorite is hiking in the rain. The feeling of the cool random raindrops is unlike any other. After shedding the clothing, it's not long before it feels completely normal. The worse thing about the entire experience is knowing it has to end. I dread that time of having to get dressed.

There is hardly anything that compares to the feeling of being naked. Most of the time when I am naked in nature it will be when I am alone. I do prefer company, but do not find myself in an environment where it is easy to make contact with others who also prefer going naked. Wearing clothes just feels tireing after you have experienced what it feels like going around naked. I would be walking somewhere and suddenly realize that the opportunity to go naked exists and just strip there and then. Enjoy your freedom!

Bummer. Nude hiking is freedom and the ultimate way to experience nature.

I enjoy hiking in the nude, free and feel whole with Nature, the Earth and the Sky. Its an overwhelming feeling of Joy. Having to do this in secret, almost hiding, does not feel right at all to me, but our Society has not understood that yet. I wish i knew more of those places where I could hike freely without meeting any clothes hikers or rangers.

I spent two days hiking nude in a California State Park. The only person I saw was a ranger that drove by on a backroad, he just waved and kept going. Good thing he didn't ask me to put my shorts back on, I didn't realize I had accidentally dropped them a couple miles back. Oops! Found them on the way out the next day. A nude hike to a backcountry lake for a swim is the only way to go!

Been freehiking for a couple of years. Nothing more enjoyable than the freedom of enjoying the great outdoors with nothing inhibiting all the sensations the environment has to offer. The fact that I have also lost 30lbs is a bonus. (not including the clothes:) I highly recommend it to all hiking enthusiasts.

There is a great nude hike in Southern California to Deep Creek Hot Springs. It's about 2 miles from the parking lot to the hot springs, and you can do all of it nude, then soak in the hot springs. For a full report check out Things To Do Nude which has page on Deep Creek with directions.

Freehiking is great. I don't mind hiking clothed if its cold; but if it is warm, the clothing has to go!

I constantly hike naked (some naked mountain biking as well). Well, every couple of weeks or so. Mostly to hot springs and on mountain trails (especially Mt. Charleston) near Las Vegas, NV. Around here the hiking season is pretty much year-round, with a couple winter months requiring clothing at times, and a couple summer months doing little but beckoning nakedness at others.
The experience defies simple description and must be enjoyed first-hand. I've never heard of anyone saying they tried naked hiking and regretted or disliked it! It is true that it is addictive. I personally believe it to be the most healthy addiction possible though. Clothed hikers I've seen have all been either neutral or understanding and accepting. Perhaps even empathetic and intrigued.
It's almost ironic- The pleasure of being naked on a hike is not sexual but it indeed rivals and even competes heartily with sexual pleasure, and even "release" over the course of a long enough outing. Utter lust free sensuality could be a term.
My personal mode is generally one of total commitment. I am generally NOT prepared to cover my genitals during a hike without a substantial recovery effort, aside from relocating my hat during a day hike (dusk and pre-dawn jaunts to the hot springs are rather frequent). If I felt ashamed about it I guess I wouldn't do it, like everything else. Other people usually seem to "get" this during "REALISTIC" encounters like the ones I've had with dressed people.

I have hiked nude and would do it again. It feels great and is fun!

I agree with the comment about being part of nature vs. observing nature. I wish there were more places to hike nude and skinny dip. One must go to remote places to avoid confrontation.

I remember my first freehike in Utah just a few years ago, and how amazing it felt to the have the sun on my skin, and being at one with the earth. I went with a group I didn't know very well, but that's the thing about being nude together, it's easier to get to know each other and be real. We all have this unique thing in common. I had so much and have been freehiking ever since!
