The DAILY DIRT - The nitty and the gritty of outdoor news

Canadian Lassie Saves Girl, Warms Hearts

Get ready for the "awwwwwwwwww," 'cause it's coming, and it's going to be a big one. In eastern Ontario, a 2 1/2-year-old Canadian girl wandered away unnoticed from her aunt's farm, disappearing into the woods nearby. In Ontario, nights get cold, and that particular region is reportedly thick forest striped with steep cliffs.

Luckily, her aunt's dog, a collie named Shilo, went with her.
At 5:20 a.m. Tuesday, a police dog team found the two unharmed, with Shilo sprawled over the girl, about 2 miles from where the she disappeared. Police said the girl's body was matted with the collie's fur but she suffered only minor scratches in the ordeal.

Shilo ran into the bush when he saw the police dogs but found his way home hours later unharmed, the report said.
The dog actually draped itself over the little girl to keep her warm through the night. (Either that, or he mistook the child for a bed). After the ordeal, the aunt gave the dog to the girl and her family. I think somebody's in for  lifetime of treats...yyesss, you are! Yyyesss, you are!!

Good boy, Shilo — you certainly did your collie genes proud with a Lassie-worthy bout of child saving. Now, on to stopping barn fires!
