U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service determines 1 in 5 Americans are birdwatchers
Look to your left. Look to your right. Now prepare yourself, because there's a solid chance that one of those people is—gasp—a birdwatcher! According to a study conducted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, 1 in 5 Americans participates in birdwatching. That's 20 percent of the population, or about 48 million people."This U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service study further reinforces the importance of bird conservation," said Darin Schroeder, the American Bird Conservancy's vice president for conservation advocacy. He said researchers found one-third of all U.S. bird species are either declining in number or facing serious threats. Are you an out-and-proud birdwatcher/backpacker? I confess that I'm a birdwatcher. After getting into hiking and backpacking, I became curious about the birds I heard and saw on the trail. Since I always hike with a small pocket journal, I'd write down the features of the bird (ex. sparrow size, red head, yellow chest, black wings) or the bird's song (ex. "shreee shreee") and try to look it up online when I got home. If I had my camera handy (which I usually do) I'd try to snap a photo or take a little video to record the bird song. A great resource I use on my PC (but even better for iPhone users) is ibirdexplorer.com. I use the PC version, which is at http://identify.whatbird.com/ Each page dedicated to a bird gets photos, drawings, and audio files of bird songs.
(And no, I don't work for these companies.)
