Safety pins have tons of uses. I put them all over my pack. I also carry spare split rings, paracord, and duct tape. I also carry a small aluminum tube for tent pole repair.

I always keep a little tube of superglue in my kit. Remember to check this every year or so, as the tubes will dry out eventually. Also, a larger needle + dental floss is strong enough to stitch anything, even boot leather. My Leatherman Micra is the handiest tool I've ever carried. They make a similar model with pliers instead of scissors, too.
New to my kit: a 6"x6" piece of strong polyester cloth, to use for patches is needed. It's practically weightless.

Thread your needle before you put it in your kit.

Make sure your needle and thread are the extra strong kind. The small needles your mom uses to patch your clothes may not be strong enough to push through pack straps. Small thread won't hold much either.

para cord works great for many repairs! Its super strong(550lbs). I always carry it everywhere I go. Even if its only a bracelet.

I use Gorilla duct tape as well, its the strongest out there. I wrap it several times around each of my trekking poles. Fix just about anything and great for blister prevention.

Tie-wraps (the kind electricians use to bundle wires together.) You can use these to bind together all kinds of things, and a handful of 6" tie-wraps weighs less than an ounce. (I was on a sub in the Navy and these were second only to duct tape for fixing things and securing stuff we didn't want banging around.

How bout some glue (Gorilla quick dry) and some kite string, parachute rope, or dental floss. And how bout something to cut the wire? Gorilla also makes the best Duct Tape I've ever used...

I've used a paperclip on numerous occasions to fix various backpack issues. Don't leave home without it.

Waterproof bandages combined with duck tape is a great waterproof barrier. I fixed a boat (on day 3 of a 10 day trip) with duck tape but needed the waterproof bandages to keep the ducktape from pealing off, so I know it seals out anything you can though at it
