Go academic
Many college outing clubs welcome locals; go canyoneering in Arizona (clubs.arizona.edu/~ramblers) or study petroglyphs in Oregon (outdoorprogram.uoregon.edu).
Join clubs
Hike with local chapters of the Sierra Club (sierraclub.org), Appalachian Mountain Club (outdoors.org), Colorado Mountain Club (cmc.org), or Washington's Mountaineers (mountaineers.org).
